How to Reserve a Trade Name in Dubai: Rules, Fee and Next Steps
A practical guide to reserving a Dubai mainland trade name: the naming rules, current booking fee, application steps, and what a reservation does—and does not—allow you to do.

Reserving a trade name is an early step in setting up a Dubai mainland company. The name must fit the licensed activity and satisfy Dubai's naming rules. A reservation confirms the proposed business name, but it is not the trade licence that allows the company to operate.
This guide covers the Dubai mainland process through the Invest in Dubai portal and the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET). A Dubai free-zone company applies through its own free-zone authority, whose naming rules and fees may differ.
What is a trade-name reservation?
A trade name identifies the business in its licensing records. Dubai's trade-name booking service issues an official document confirming the selected name. You can check availability before applying, and the name can be reserved before initial approval. You must still complete the remaining licensing steps before trading.
Start with your planned activity and legal form. The name should make sense for the activity on the licence. For example, a name suggesting contracting may be unsuitable for a company licensed only to trade building materials. If you are still choosing an activity, read our guide to selecting a UAE business activity first.
Dubai's main trade-name rules
DET says a proposed name should be distinctive, appropriate for the public, and aligned with the business activity. Its published rules also say:
- Do not choose a name that is the same as, or confusingly similar to, an existing Dubai brand, a government project, or an international brand.
- Avoid obscene or offensive wording, restricted political or sectarian references, and the names or attributes of God.
- Do not use a family, tribal, or other person's name unless it belongs to the licensee.
- Use a literal rendering of a name across languages rather than changing its meaning in translation.
- Make sure the words accurately describe or reasonably fit the activity you intend to license.
These are checks on the whole proposed name, not just one word. A name that looks available in an initial search can still be changed or cancelled by DET if a conflict is identified later. Prepare two or three alternatives before you submit.
How to reserve a Dubai mainland trade name
- Decide your activity and legal form. The name, activity and company structure are connected parts of the mainland licence application.
- Shortlist distinctive names. Check spelling, Arabic and English renderings, and whether the name implies an activity or approval you will not have.
- Search availability. Use the Invest in Dubai portal to check the proposed name. Search similar spellings as well as exact matches.
- Apply online or through a service centre. The official service page says an online application needs a verified portal account and no supporting documents for the name-booking step itself.
- Pay and keep the confirmation. Save the reservation document and use the same approved name in subsequent licensing paperwork.
As listed on the official service page when this article was checked on 12 October 2026, the standard trade-name booking fee is AED 620. Verify the payable amount in the portal before paying, especially if your application has other licensing services or special requirements. The page describes a short service time; allow longer when a name needs clarification or a revised choice.
What happens after the name is reserved?
Trade-name booking is one stage of company formation. Dubai's mainland setup guide places the trade name alongside registration of the activity and structure. The later licence stage can require initial approval, a memorandum of association, and approvals from other authorities depending on the business. A restaurant, clinic, training centre or other regulated activity can have additional requirements.
Keep the proposed name consistent across the reservation, company documents, lease and banking paperwork. If you change the activity or legal form midway, ask whether the reserved name still fits before filing the next application. Our Dubai mainland company formation guide explains the wider sequence.
Trade name versus trademark
A Dubai trade-name reservation and a UAE trademark registration serve different purposes. The first is part of licensing a company name in Dubai. A trademark is a separate application to protect a brand sign for specified goods or services, handled through the UAE Ministry of Economy and Tourism. Reserving a trade name does not by itself complete a trademark application. If the name is central to your brand, check the trademark position before investing in packaging, signage or a launch campaign. See our UAE trademark registration guide and the official trademark service.
Common delays you can avoid
- Choosing the name before the activity: the wording may imply a different business from the one you can license.
- Checking only the exact spelling: a near match to another brand can still be a problem.
- Assuming a reservation is permission to trade: operations should begin only after the appropriate licence and approvals are issued.
- Reusing mainland advice for a free zone: each free-zone authority has its own process.
Frequently asked questions
Can I reserve a name before initial approval?
Yes. Dubai's mainland setup guidance says the trade name may be reserved before initial approval. The remaining licence conditions still have to be met.
Do I need documents just to book the name?
The official booking page says no supporting documents are needed for that service, but a verified Invest in Dubai account is required. Later company-licensing stages require their own documents.
Does the AED 620 cover the entire company setup?
No. It is the fee currently displayed for booking the trade name. Licence issuance, premises, approvals and other setup costs are separate and depend on the business.
