How to Cancel a Dubai Employee Residence Visa: Employer Checklist
A practical employer checklist for final settlement, work-permit cancellation and the separate GDRFA Dubai residence cancellation step.

When a Dubai employee leaves, ending the employment contract and cancelling the residence permit are connected but separate steps. For a mainland private-sector employee under the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE), the employer normally resolves employment entitlements and the work-permit cancellation before applying to cancel the Dubai residence permit.
This guide covers the usual MOHRE and GDRFA Dubai route. A free-zone employer, another emirate or a different visa category may use a different authority or sequence, so confirm the employee's actual sponsor and permit issuer first.
Start with the employment record and final settlement
Agree on the employee's last working day and review the contract, notice and outstanding entitlements. The UAE Government's work-permit guidance says the company must confirm that the worker has received all due entitlements when cancelling a work permit. Keep the final calculation and payment evidence with the personnel file.
Do not treat a cancellation acknowledgement as a substitute for paying what is owed. If there is an unresolved labour dispute, obtain advice on the appropriate MOHRE process rather than asking an employee to confirm a settlement that has not happened. Our end-of-service gratuity guide helps with one part of the calculation.
Cancel the work permit through the correct channel
For a MOHRE-issued permit, the UAE Government lists the core cancellation steps as submitting a formal request, completing the required data and attachments, settling any outstanding fines for late issuance or non-renewal, and confirming the worker's entitlements. Save the approved cancellation evidence: GDRFA Dubai lists an extract of MOHRE work-permit cancellation among the documents for a private-sector employee's residence cancellation.
If the employee was sponsored through a free zone, check its employee and immigration processes. Do not assume a MOHRE document exists for every free-zone arrangement. The company should also check whether the employee has any active applications or dependent sponsorships that need attention.
Apply to cancel the Dubai residence permit
The GDRFA Dubai residence-permit cancellation service lists the sponsor's passport, the sponsored person's passport and, for a private-sector employee, the MOHRE cancellation extract. The sponsor can use GDRFA's digital smart services or an Amer service centre. Check the actual application screen for any additional case-specific requirement.
- Confirm sponsorship. Match the employee's residence file and sponsor details to the company records.
- Complete the employment side. Settle entitlements and obtain the applicable work-permit cancellation evidence.
- Submit the residence cancellation. Use the correct GDRFA service or Amer channel, attach the requested records and pay the amount shown.
- Keep proof and check status. Save both cancellation confirmations and give the employee the information needed to plan a transfer or departure.
As checked on 19 October 2026, GDRFA's service page lists an AED 100 residence cancellation fee plus Knowledge and Innovation Dirham charges of AED 10 each, and an expected processing time of 48 hours. Fees and processing can vary by channel or case; use the amount and status shown in the live application.
What happens to the employee's stay in the UAE?
GDRFA's Dubai service page currently states a 60-day grace period after the residence permit is cancelled or expires. The employee should check the cancellation notice and current authority guidance for their own deadline, especially if changing sponsor or visa category. A cancelled residence permit does not grant permission to work for a new employer; that employer must arrange the appropriate work authorisation. The UAE Government's residence guidance also says a person sponsoring family members must cancel those dependants' visas before cancelling their own.
Mistakes that slow the process
- Starting residence cancellation before the required MOHRE work-permit step is complete.
- Failing to reconcile final pay, leave balance or gratuity before the employee signs a settlement acknowledgement.
- Using a mainland checklist for a free-zone employee without checking the free zone's process.
- Assuming the published grace period replaces the date on the employee's own cancellation notice.
- Losing the cancellation extract or transaction number needed for the next authority or new employer.
Common questions
Can the employee cancel the residence permit alone?
The UAE Government says the sponsor normally processes the cancellation. Employees facing a dispute or an unresponsive employer should use the appropriate official labour or immigration support channel for their situation.
Is cancelling a work permit enough?
No. The work permit and the residence permit are different records. GDRFA Dubai has a separate service for residence cancellation, and its private-sector checklist refers to the MOHRE cancellation extract.
