Three UAE business owner residence pathways for investors, partners and Golden Residency applicants

Business owners frequently hear the terms investor visa, partner visa, Green Residency and Golden Visa used as if they were interchangeable. They are not. The correct route depends on the applicant's relationship with the company, the immigration category available through the relevant authority and whether the person satisfies a long-term residency programme.

It is also important to recognise that “investor visa” and “partner visa” can be informal market descriptions. The wording shown in an application or residence record may differ by authority, jurisdiction and current service structure.

The three pathways in simple terms

PathwayWho it generally suitsCore distinction
Standard owner-linked residence
Often called investor or partner visa
A shareholder or partner obtaining residence through a UAE company and its immigration fileNormally connected to the sponsoring establishment and its valid licence
Green Residency
Investor or business partner
A person investing in or participating in a UAE commercial activity and meeting the current conditionsFive-year renewable, self-sponsored residence
Golden ResidencyAn applicant who independently qualifies under an investor, entrepreneur, real-estate or other eligible categoryLong-term self-sponsored residence, generally five or ten years depending on category

Company ownership by itself does not automatically qualify a person for Golden Residency. A normal trade licence and a qualifying Golden Residency investment are separate tests.

What is commonly called an investor visa?

In everyday business-setup language, an investor visa often means a residence permit obtained because the applicant owns a UAE establishment or holds shares in a company. Sole owners and shareholders may see the term used differently across Mainland and Free Zone processes.

This route is usually linked to the company's active trade licence, establishment or immigration card and eligibility to sponsor residence permits. The company and applicant must complete the procedures required by the relevant immigration authority.

Typical supporting records can include:

  • valid trade licence;
  • memorandum or articles showing the applicant's ownership;
  • establishment or immigration card;
  • passport and personal photograph;
  • entry permit or status-change record where applicable;
  • medical fitness result;
  • health insurance meeting the applicable requirement;
  • Emirates ID application; and
  • additional approvals or financial evidence requested for the case.

Validity, fees and required ownership evidence vary by jurisdiction and service. Confirm the current service card rather than relying on an old two- or three-year description found online.

What is commonly called a partner visa?

A partner visa is generally an owner-linked residence description used where the applicant is one of several partners or shareholders rather than the sole owner. In practical processing, investor and partner applications can be closely related.

The distinction often comes from the company's legal documents and how the person is recorded on the licence or memorandum. It does not necessarily mean that a partner receives an entirely separate package of immigration benefits.

Before applying, verify:

  • that the applicant is correctly recorded as a current partner or shareholder;
  • that ownership information is consistent across the licence, memorandum and immigration file;
  • whether a minimum ownership value or supporting statement applies;
  • whether the company has an active establishment card;
  • that amendments or share transfers have been completed; and
  • which authority processes residence for that licensing jurisdiction.

Green Residency for investors and business partners

The UAE Green Residency provides a clearer federal long-term category for investors and business partners. It is a renewable residence permit valid for five years and does not require a sponsor or employer inside the UAE.

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security states that an investor or business partner must provide proof of investment or partnership in a UAE project and hold the required licences and approvals. The official Green Residency guidance should be checked for current conditions.

For a Dubai application, GDRFA lists documents such as a passport, photograph, partnership or memorandum of association/investment contract and trade licence for its Green residence service for partners and investors.

What is Golden Residency?

Golden Residency is a long-term, self-sponsored residence programme for specified eligible categories. It is not limited to business owners. Categories include investors, entrepreneurs, exceptional talents and specialised professionals, among others.

For business-related applicants, the most relevant pathways commonly include:

  • investors in public investments;
  • real-estate investors; and
  • entrepreneurs with qualifying projects and endorsements.

The current ICP overview describes ten-year residence for qualifying public-investment applicants, five-year residence for qualifying real-estate investors and five-year residence for qualifying entrepreneurs. Each category has its own evidence and approval requirements.

Golden Residency for public investment

The official ICP guidance lists several ways an applicant may demonstrate the public-investment category, including qualifying investment-fund deposits, qualifying capital in a commercial or industrial company, or specified tax-contribution evidence.

A commonly referenced threshold is AED 2 million, but the required proof depends on the route used. Applicants should not assume that a company's package price, licence cost or authorised capital automatically meets the investment test.

Golden Residency for real-estate investors

The real-estate pathway is assessed using qualifying property ownership and evidence from the relevant land or real-estate registration authority. The ICP overview currently references property with a value of at least AED 2 million, subject to the applicable conditions and required evidence.

This is a property-based route. Holding shares in an operating company is not a substitute for the real-estate eligibility requirements.

Golden Residency for entrepreneurs

The entrepreneur pathway focuses on a qualifying entrepreneurial project rather than ordinary company ownership alone. The current ICP overview refers to an auditor's confirmation of project value and confirmation from a competent authority or approved business incubator that the project is innovative or technical/future-oriented.

An applicant who owns a conventional consultancy, trading or service licence should not assume that the business automatically meets the entrepreneur category. Eligibility and endorsements must be assessed against the current service requirements.

Which route may be suitable?

Choose an owner-linked residence when:

  • you own or hold shares in a UAE company;
  • you need a practical residence connected to that operating business;
  • the company can maintain its licence and immigration establishment; and
  • you do not currently require or qualify for a long-term programme.

Explore Green Residency when:

  • you can prove qualifying investment or partnership in a UAE project;
  • you prefer a five-year self-sponsored route;
  • you hold the necessary licences and approvals; and
  • you meet the current immigration authority conditions.

Assess Golden Residency when:

  • your investment, property or entrepreneurial project meets a defined Golden category;
  • you can obtain all required fund, land-department, auditor, tax-authority, incubator or competent-authority evidence;
  • you want longer-term self-sponsored residence; and
  • you understand that nomination or initial eligibility does not replace final approval.

Does a business licence include a visa?

A licence package may include an immigration allocation or eligibility to apply for residence, but the licence itself is not a residence permit. Immigration procedures remain separate and can include establishment registration, entry or status procedures, medical fitness, Emirates ID and insurance.

When comparing setup packages, ask whether the advertised price includes only visa eligibility or also government immigration charges, status change, medical examination, Emirates ID, insurance and assistance fees.

Can the visa remain valid if the company closes?

An owner-linked residence is generally dependent on the sponsoring company and its immigration file. Company closure, licence cancellation or removal of the applicant as a shareholder can require the residence to be cancelled or changed.

Green and Golden Residency are self-sponsored, but holders must continue satisfying applicable conditions and complete required renewals or updates. Long-term validity does not remove every compliance obligation.

Application process

  1. Identify the correct category. Separate ordinary ownership residence from Green and Golden eligibility.
  2. Confirm the responsible authority. Dubai cases may use GDRFA channels, while ICP serves federal channels and other emirates.
  3. Check current conditions. Use the exact service card for the applicant's category and location.
  4. Prepare supporting evidence. Ensure company, investment, property or project records match the selected route.
  5. Obtain nomination or approval where required. Certain Golden categories need supporting letters from designated bodies.
  6. Complete immigration formalities. This may include application, entry/status procedures, medical fitness, insurance and Emirates ID.
  7. Maintain eligibility and records. Renew licences, update personal information and preserve supporting evidence.

Common mistakes

  • assuming investor visa and Golden Visa are the same;
  • believing any company shareholder automatically qualifies for Golden Residency;
  • using outdated visa durations or investment thresholds;
  • confusing licence visa allocation with an issued residence permit;
  • selecting a package before confirming immigration eligibility;
  • failing to update company documents after a share transfer;
  • submitting inconsistent investment values across documents;
  • overlooking health insurance, medical fitness or Emirates ID steps; and
  • treating nomination as guaranteed final approval.
